Role of the Study Buddy Volunteer Tutor

Being a tutor for Study Buddy is a volunteer position.  While you will not be receiving a paycheck for your time spent tutoring, you can receive credit towards your school’s math honor society or International Baccalaureate community service requirement provided that you log into your tutoring sessions through the Study Buddy site using your assigned VyewBook address as your screen name.  The VyewBook address is the URL address sent to you by NSTEP after you complete your registration.

You will need to be recommended by your math teacher in order to be a Study Buddy tutor.  Ask your teacher today if you are ready for this important position.

Registration:

Your teacher will give you a code that you can use to register yourself as a tutor (click here), or your teacher may do the registration for you.

Time Commitment: (NSTEP does not have a minimum time commitment.)

Once you are registered, you will need to familiarize yourself with how to effectively use the VyewBook software that allows you to conduct tutoring sessions over the internet.  Once you are familiar with the workings of Study Buddy’s VyewBook system, Study Buddy does not have a minimum or maximum time commitment.  Simply schedule yourself online for those times which are convenient for you.  Our schedule works in ½ hour blocks.  We only ask that once you schedule yourself, you honor your commitment so that no student is left without a tutor.  When it is your scheduled time to tutor, please go to the virtual tutor lobby at  www.vyew.com/nstep .  When a student requests a tutor, the system will automatically pull you into their Vyewbook.  You do not have to do anything.   While you are logged in during your scheduled time, it is possible that there will not be any students online who need tutors.  In that case, simply stay logged onto the Study Buddy website and do other tasks (although if you roam into Study Buddies public VyewBooks while you are waiting you will go to the end of the tutor queue).

Materials:

If you need additional resources during a tutoring session, there are worksheets created by professional tutors which you can upload directly into the student’s VyewBook during a tutoring session.  These worksheets can guide your lesson.  The student may also upload their own materials from class.  As a tutor, you also have the opportunity to create your own worksheets to be published on our website.  If you have created a worksheet that you would like to add to our library, please submit it to us at studybuddy@nstep-online.org.  It will be reviewed by a team of professionals and could be published on our site!

As a Study Buddy tutor, you will be helping someone who may not otherwise have access to a tutor and who is struggling with math.  You will be helping a teenager like yourself gain the tools to stay in school and graduate.

Role of the Study Buddy Tutor Sponsoring Teacher

Registration:

As the teacher sponsoring a group of tutors, you will have the option of registering each of your tutors, or of providing each of your tutors with an access code provided by NSTEP, that will allow them to register themselves.

Training:

We recommend that you or another person affiliated with your math club or class familiarize yourself with how to use the VyewBook software.  This can be done at your convenience by viewing a 30 minute webinar which will soon be posted to the Study Buddy site. You will then be able to assist your tutors as they become familiar with the VyewBook software.

Monitoring:

We will generate periodic reports that will allow you to monitor the amount of time your students are tutoring.

Monitoring:

Students who are being tutored have their own personal online notebook or VyewBook.  The student can share access to the VyewBook with a parent, teacher, club leader or mentor by giving them the unique user name, which is the same as the VyewBook’s unique web address.  The adult can then log into the student’s online VyewBook at any time (even during an actual tutoring session) by going to that unique web address.  The adult can look directly at the pages of the student’s book and monitor the student’s progress and activity in the VyewBook.  Teachers can award extra credit based on the student’s use of  Study Buddy.  Study Buddy administrators will randomly spot-check students’ VyewBooks to monitor content, but the primary responsibility to monitor students’ VyewBook content rests with the student’s teacher, club leader, mentor or parent.
